Muster rolls, 1811-1920.

These are muster rolls for units of the Kentucky Militia, the State Guard, the Kentucky National Guard, and other military units from Kentucky. They document the enlistment and discharge of soldiers from the War of 1812 through World War I. Information recorded may vary, but rolls typically include each soldier's name, age, rank, military unit, date and place of enlistment, length of term, and promotion data. Some of the rolls appear to have been copied from missing originals.

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety. Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
